Shopping Cart Design: Getting it Right

Companies spend millions of dollars on their online marketing efforts in the hope that eventually people will click that little shopping cart button tucked away discreetly in a corner, and complete the process with a purchase. Their pessimism is not unfounded. Studies reveal that a vast majority of shopping carts are abandoned along the way, and these don’t even have squeaky wheels! While there could be a number of reasons to explain this behavior, marketers will do their chances no harm if they give their shopping cart design some thought.

Believe it or not, the online shopping process actually has a larger number of “to-do steps” compared to a quick trip to the local Wal-Mart. That’s because apart from finding, placing, checking out and paying as we do in a brick and mortar store, there’s the additional review of the shopping cart with each new item, an account creation process (if one doesn’t have it already), followed by a log-in, followed by an online payment process, followed by a “buy now” confirmation and a log out… phew! Can we blame them for preferring to drive a couple of miles and spend ten minutes finding that elusive parking slot? At least the actual shopping isn’t such a pain!

But before you throw the baby out with the bathwater; take a look at some common shopping cart design flaws which contribute towards a high drop out incidence. Avoiding these mistakes on your website may help retain customers with a genuine intent to buy.

What’s in a name? Plenty, apparently! Shoppers anywhere are simple minded people. They’re usually the find cart- fill cart- pay- get out variety. No reason to believe online shoppers are any different – they’re expecting to find a shopping cart, so please give them one. Don’t experiment with names like basket, barrow, bag… It’ll only serve to confuse them. Add a cart icon for good measure!

Loading the cart is not the same as buying. Some online shopping sites feature a “buy” button even when the customer is merely looking around or loading the cart before taking a final decision. “Buy” suggest an irrevocable commitment and will drive many people away. “Add to cart” is much less pushy.

Tell them how many. Quite often, an online buying process will allow the customer to continue adding items, without going back to the shopping cart. While this is supposed to make it more convenient, it can be quite unsettling if the customer cannot see what has been stacked up so far. The shopping cart design must include a feature whereby a summary of the items in the cart is displayed at the top of each page. This also assures the customer that he or she has successfully added all the required items to the cart, or removed them from it, as the case may be.

Don’t ask them if they want fries with their order. Some shopping cart design models have a built-in cross-selling feature that pops a question as soon as something is put into the cart. This is the online equivalent of being stalked by an overenthusiastic salesperson. When a buyer is busy filling the cart, all he or she seeks is confirmation of that process. Don’t spoil it.

Putting the cart before the horse! Sometimes, buyers are asked to register, provide shipping, billing and even credit card details before they have a total cost of items in their cart. Taxes, freight and service charges are added at the end, and could make an impact on the decision to buy. Asking the customer for so much personal information before they even know what it’s going to cost them, is not a smart idea!

Keep it simple. An effective shopping cart design will ensure that the buying process is simple, intuitive and as painless as possible. Some sites actually issue instructions on how to use or update the shopping cart. Others require users to type a “0” in the quantity column if they wish to cancel an order. Spare your customer. A “remove or delete item” button works best.

Remember, a shopping cart is much more important in the scheme of things, when it comes to online selling. Ensure that you design yours well, to maximize chances of converting a casual visit into a sale. The next step is to choose a reliable vendor* for setting it up. True, it takes the vision of an entrepreneur to get things going, but where would one be without the support of family, employees and the larger community? In seeking to balance your work and family priorities, you have no doubt devoted a lot of attention to nurturing both. However, as the head of a business which has reaped the rewards of being part of a larger community, you have an obligation to give back at least a little. There are many options open to a business desirous of serving the community. Take your pick.

Support a cause

Is the excessive deforestation in your neck of the woods not to your liking? Well, don’t just whine from the sidelines, do something about it! If fiery activism is not your thing, resort to milder methods. Switch to eco-friendly practices at work – conserving paper or using recycled materials is a good place to start. Maybe you can carry that forward by placing a little “go green” logo or slogan on company stationary. This is just one way of serving the community - we’re sure you can think of a million others.

Donate voluntary time

This is one of the harder ways of serving the community, since it truly tests your commitment. Do it with sincerity and you will not only feel the satisfaction of paying your dues, but will also stand out as a champion member of the community. To ensure that the time spent is most productive, deploy your collective energies in an area in which your business has expertise. So, if you’re in the business of computers, how about a little software education for kids?

Contribute to charity

We’ve talked about this earlier, but think it worthwhile to dwell upon it again. After all, it’s for a good cause! Which one you choose to support and how, is your call, but in general, supporting issues that have widespread impact can yield larger benefits. Donating to the Breast Cancer Donation Shop through is one example. Many businesses, big and small are doing their bit for people who don’t have it as good, and may the trend continue to grow. If doing charity is your chosen way of serving the community, you can contemplate supporting an established organization or launching a trust fund of your own.

Plan an event

This could be a highly effective way of serving the community, as the success of the initiative depends upon the participation of community members. If supporting those who are physically challenged is something that you are passionate about, organizing a local sports event for them could be just the thing! On the other hand, die hard conservationist companies could sponsor a cookery contest, where everyone has to cook using solar cookers. If you’re not much good at organizing, it’s time you learned the basics. While these activities are fun, more importantly, they are interactive and secure a buy-in from other participants. So you not only get to serve the community, you enroll them as well!

And if the pleasure of paying back the community isn’t reward enough, your business will also benefit from a solid reputation as a caring and responsible member. Who could ask for more?

Pick five qualities that you associate strongly with entrepreneurship – did you list risk taking, passion, profit making, vision, boredom… yes, boredom! If you didn’t include the last one, think again, for it’s one of the prime factors that have led to a new breed – the serial entrepreneur.

A serial entrepreneur is one who doesn’t do things in half measures. (Either that, or he just doesn’t get it!) Starting and moving on from one business to another is part of his genetic makeup. First, there’s the purebred serial entrepreneur who flirts with business after business, leaving behind a fair share of successes and failures; the other is either more daring or a hybrid entrepreneur-manager (depending on how you choose to view it) who straddles more than one business at a go. But, both are joined at the hip when it comes to one characteristic – they never know when (or perhaps the word is “how”) to stop.

Most serial entrepreneurs will profess their dislike for day to day management of a running business that they were only too glad to start-up. While they are gung-ho about meeting the challenges of a fresh start – outlining vision, raising funds and drawing up business plans, they seem to lose it a bit when it comes to taking their business to the next level. And when the novelty of starting out wears off, that’s when the serial entrepreneur bolts the stable! Even those that choose to stay with multiple businesses long after the initial stage, hire a team of capable managers providing the perfect foil to their own “non-managerial” persona.

It’s also rare to find a serial entrepreneur with a passion for a particular product or industry - that’s almost a contradiction in terms. Rather, this breed has its sights firmly trained on more important matters – the bottomline, growth potential or cash flow, for instance. Most will confess that they don’t really care what widget they make, as long as it makes them some pretty money!

If you’re a wannabe serial entrepreneur, you might like to take a few lessons from those that have been there, done that.

You must optimize resources. The advantage of starting a second or third business is that the first one can help you get a head start. Take resources like cash, people or IT infrastructure, for example. Don’t duplicate these across businesses – leverage your existing sales force to cross sell; build a group website rather than individual company sites; and combine administrative functions like recruitment and accounting.

It gets easier. Each experience takes you up a couple of notches. A previous history of setting up a company will add the credibility that is so essential to opening new doors.

Be prepared to move on. Failure is probably a more important part of serial entrepreneurship than success. While you don’t have to look forward to it, don’t dread it either; certainly don’t be disheartened by it. As the wise folks at myGoals.com advise, failure, especially by a small margin, is found to be a huge motivator, and serial entrepreneurs must learn to accept the higher risk associated with running multiple businesses. Remember, being a serial entrepreneur is a bit of a long haul; you have to stay in the game to win it.

Wanting to sell and actually selling your business are two very different things. Once you’ve decided that you want out, a whole lot of preparatory work goes into making your company saleable in investors’ eyes. By not covering all the bases, you stand a significant risk of drawing either weak or no bids. Let’s take a closer look at what it takes to make that once-in-a-millennium deal.

But before that, a quick word about buyers. There are basically two types of suitors for any business on the block. The first type is the financial buyer, who looks for opportunities to buy out companies mainly using debt financing – this buyer will therefore select companies with adequate cash flow to service the debt.

A majority of buyers are financial buyers. Since their major interest is to sell the business at a profit later, they are not likely to interfere in the day to day management of the business.

The other type of buyer is the strategic buyer – by definition, this buyer is looking to add value to any other existing line of business. Make no mistake, this buyer will know the market as well as anyone else, and will therefore negotiate hard on price.

Such a deal is consummated only if there are synergies between your company and the other. If you sell out to a strategic buyer, be prepared for at least some changes in the way your business is run.

Regardless of the nature of the acquisition, financial statements play a pivotal role in any buyout deal. And audited statements carry a lot more weight than those that are not. Your past records will be analyzed threadbare, and any future projections will be challenged – be prepared to defend like crazy!

The subject of financial scrutiny and necessary due diligence in buyout deals is far too elaborate to cover here. However, we’ll leave you with a few tips to get you started:

• Don’t slack off. Keep all your statements in order, and complete them on time. A simple matter of forgetting to meet a tax deadline can make a perfectly above board company look suspicious.

• Go for precision. There’s no room for fuzz here. Make sure the numbers are accurate and comprehensive. That’s precisely why audited statements command respect.

• Get real. Valuations approximating or exceeding revenue are the stuff of dreams. Be reasonable in your expectations, yet don’t sell yourself short. Be sure to factor in intangible, yet important assets such as intellectual capital.

• Get into shape. Trim the flab before you go looking for buyers. If certain product lines are a drain on the rest of the company, get rid of them first.

Finally, timing is everything. You may have done everything right, but if the market’s a mess, your business won’t fetch a tidy sum. Don’t jump into any deal without understanding market sentiments beforehand.

Let’s go back to age old wisdom which says that all men are not made equal. And as the boss of a diversified workforce, you probably believe in that more than anyone else. In any group, you will find overachievers and underperformers. While getting rid of the latter may seem an obvious solution, it’s not necessarily the best or the right thing to do.

Often, a below par performance has more to do with external circumstances, than any inherent laziness or lack of talent in the individual. As the senior person in the organization, it is your responsibility to find out the real reasons behind the poor showing of an underperformer, and take steps to remedy the situation.

In many cases you may find that some simple changes can work wonders. The trick is to get to the bottom of things. Here is a list of the most common causes of poor performance.

No clarity of job description. Oh, that’s just great! Say that you’re looking to deepen existing client relationships, but your sales manager believes that his priority is to recruit new clients. Obviously, you think he doesn’t do his job.

This can be rectified by laying down clear job descriptions for important, if not all employees. Put down key deliverables, being as specific as possible. Once expectations are put in writing, there’s far less room for confusion.

Inadequate support or resources. You can’t blame employees for turning out a poor show if they don’t have the necessary tools. If your finance manager is doing the job of the cost accountant in addition to trying to manage her own responsibilities, you need to reward her instead of pulling her up on her slip ups!

Evaluate the resource needs of your staff from time to time, and do your best to fulfil them. Sure, you can’t always satisfy all their needs, but any support from your side will result in a more motivated workforce.

Lack of training. Training is usually looked upon as a cost rather than an investment, and that’s where the problem lies. If you expect your employees to cope with the growth and increasing complexity of the business, you must make sure they have the necessary skills.

Formulate a training plan and stick to it. Let the results speak for themselves.

External distractions. Imagine writing a strategy paper if the neighbouring building is undergoing repairs. Or sitting in an area adjoining the copier station!

Outside factors such as noise, excessive heat or even a disruptive neighbour can reduce the most capable people to underperformers. Fortunately, this situation can usually be easily remedied (except in the case of the latter) with some rearrangement.

Personal issues. What do you do when a top performer suddenly slacks off? Sit down with her or him and probe gently, taking care not to seem too interfering. Personal problems do get in the way of performance, and if you have the patience to wait it out, your underperformer will soon return to his or her winning ways.

Dealing with underperformers is a difficult, yet essential task. Make sure that you do what is fair, else you might just be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Business License – This is the basic license that you will need to operate a business legally. Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) – Also known as a tax identification number, this is required for almost all types of businesses. Depending on where your business is located, you may also need to acquire a similar tax identification number from your state.

Health Department Permits – If your business involves the preparation and/or sale of food, you will need a county health department permit. Note that the health department will inspect your facilities before issuing one.

Sales Tax License – This license is essential before you can sell almost any product or service in any state.

Fire Department Permits – Businesses such as restaurants, day-care centers or any other that attract a large crowd need a permit from the fire department.

Special State-Issued Business Licenses or Permits – You may need special licenses if your business involves the sale of certain types of products including liquor, lottery tickets, gasoline and firearms.

Special State-Issued Occupational / Professional Licenses – In many states, people in certain occupations must have licenses or occupational permits. State licensing is typically required for auto mechanics, plumbers, electricians, building contractors, collection agents, insurance agents, real estate brokers, repossessors and personal service providers (beauticians, cosmetologists, therapists and masseurs). If you are thinking of starting any of these businesses, you will have to pass state examinations in order to get the permit. Contact your state government offices to get a complete list of occupations that require licensing.

Special Federal Business Licenses or Permits – You may also require special business licenses from the federal government if your business involves investment advising, drug manufacturing, preparation of meat products, broadcasting, manufacturing tobacco, alcohol or firearms.

Licensing and permit requirements for small businesses vary from state to state; it is therefore a good idea for you to contact your state and local government to determine the specific obligations for your new business.

Paying attention to detail could be the difference between success and failure in business. One shop sales man was approached by a lady who wanted to buy a shirt for her son. She did not have the size. She told the salesman that her son was about his size and requested him to wear a shirt she had selected. The salesman was wearing a jacket which covered his crumpled shirt and only the collar of his shirt was pressed. But he had to remove the jacket, which exposed his wrinkled shirt.

How many times we have been caught in a similar dilemma. Unless we pay attention to detail we might be caught on the wrong foot. Your dress, your manners and your approach should always be well tuned.

You should think of the occasion. A sales meeting or a board meeting you should dress according to the occasion. The first impression is extremely important. You should realize you will not get a second chance to make the first impression. If you are not suitably attired the clients might think that you are not the person they want to negotiate with.

One a sweltering hot day Charles De Gaulle met one of his minister’s who was in his shorts. A highly conservative De Gaulle stared long and hard. Then he asked his minister “monsieur, where is your hoop”

You should not offend the people you meet. Never get into an argument with your clients or suppliers.

The suit you wear should be well pressed, your shoes well polished. The dress you wear and your haircut should suit your image. Wearing clothes that are not tailored according to the current fashion might make you look outdated.

Even your car is an important factor in building up your image. An obsolete, outdated and not well maintained is car sure to tarnish your image.

Your dress, your attention and your focus should be on the job at hand.
