Career Choice - the Considerations

How does one decide one’s career? How does one decide and take a decision that may shape the life excellently or doom it forever? It is not as if nobody has the right or opportunity to choose their own vocations. Circumstances decide the way things will go. But it is true that many people when asked, will say that they would prefer a different job or career of their own taste and liking.

Most people now have a formal education before they step in the real world where each one is to his own. Careers start at a very junior level. There are very few people who actually start at the top. They either inherit or are extremely brilliant. You may consider artists. Art is considered by most of us as a hobby. Very few venture from the beginning to become artists for a living, since it is well known that an artist might take years before his work is recognized and gets some value. Till then they are non-entities and have to depend on some other vocation for their living.

May times careers are decided by an individuals belief in his/her capability. Bill Gates left Harvard to co-found Microsoft. If he had continued at Harvard, he might not have reached where he is today. He might have gone the conventional way of taking up the best job offering a good salary. Instead he pursued his natural talent in software. I needn’t talk further about him. People actually take up jobs and see how they cope up with the same. It has been seen in many cases, where executives keep on flitting between different jobs and departments and ultimately take up something else which is very

different from what they started with. Its this experimentation which helps them discover their natural talent. People learn about their own temperament with experience. They slowly move towards their goal. Very few are able to transform their avocations into their vocations.

People with determination try and succeed wonderfully in their own interest and work. Kalpana Chawla, the astronaut on the ill fated Columbia, nursed a wish to fly into space and become an astronaut. Scientists like Einstein, Edison with their independent thinking and research reached a position which is unrivaled. Abraham Lincoln chose politics and social work as his line and after numerous failures, became one of the most revered Presidents of the US. Gandhi and Martin Luther King chose the path of social change. They pursued their hearts and achieved their goals.

The opportunity for pursuing one’s natural talent always exists. Its how one recognizes the same and then pursues the instinct that decides one’s fate.

Career- are You in the Right Seat?

We all have a chair that designates a position in our career. For most of us the position, the responsibilities, the growth prospects and many such factors decide if we are happy in our seat? Sometimes, we may be unaware that another seat may send us much higher in the hierarchy and satisfaction level. Sometimes we are frustrated with our job for no easily identifiable reason. There are many such factors that determine if we are on the right seat. Let us examine some of them.

Involvement

How involved we are with what we do? Are we so engrossed with our job, that we have no time to think of anything else? Or we are so less connected with our job that having it or not makes no difference to us? Albert Einstein, the great scientist was so involved with his job of thinking and finding solutions to mysteries of physics and cosmos that he had no time left for anything else. His involvement was total. Do you have such an involvement?

Joy

Do we feel joy in what we do? I have taken this right near the top, because if we are dissatisfied for any reason, we will never get joy. If we get joy then most of things are going in the right direction. So think if you are getting joy in your job?

Respect

If you are working with the right people and doing the right job, you will always get the respect of your colleagues. If the respect is missing, please take that as a red signal telling you that something might be amiss.

Skill

Do you find your skills and aptitude matching the job requirements? You might be made for greater things in life. Please get your skills assessed and find out if you are wasting time with a low skilled job, when you should have been working with something requiring great skills and abilities.

There are other factors such as vision for the job, future growth potential, learning opportunities and such other factors that decide if you are on the right seat. The right person for the right job - are you the right person for your job and more importantly, is the job right for you?

I have given some pointers for thought. Ultimately, it is your life goals and values that will always decide if the job fits you. That can be done only by you. What is most important is that you review your job and your satisfaction level at frequent intervals and bring changes to create a more meaningful life. So find out today if you are in the right seat in your career.

Portfolios have always been popular among artists, architects and other creative professionals. Always make sure that you can carry your portfolio in a briefcase. If you need to use a laptop to present your portfolio, do so. Just be sure that everything is in scale and of adequate size.

Another way to put your portfolio into the hands of possible employers is to use a personal website. Before you do this, however, you need to be sure that you do not include any information that you or your past employers would not want publicly displayed. If you have any doubts as to what information a past employer will allow you to use, contact the employer directly. This could save you a lot of hassles in the long run.

A portfolio is a great way to show employers that you will be a great addition to their team, but you should be careful to not go overboard. Create interview portfolios that are customized to the position you are applying for. Avoid including skills and accomplishments that are not pertinent to your future position. You should also include information that highlights your communication skills. Companies want to hire people that can communicate well. They also want to hire people that can write captivating text. Demonstrate that you can do both with an interview portfolio.

There are federal laws in place to address grievances as well as stipulated minimum payments that employees must be given for working overtime. The laws are elaborate with several exemptions, so familiarize yourselves with them before you decide on what and how you pay your staff.

Have you heard about the kids who live across the street from the school and are always running in as the bell rings? Or about the employee who lives just around the corner and is always the last to arrive each morning?

Strangely enough, the same can be true for an entrepreneur who has chosen to be a home-based business owner. Discipline often has more to do with being late (or not arriving at all) than anything else.

Procrastination, focus or discipline — it doesn’t matter what you call it. The fact is that some people just can’t seem to do what they need to do, when they need to do it. When deciding whether to be a home-based business or have an office at another location, the key determinating factor is whether you have the discipline to be home-based. It doesn’t matter why you aren’t in your office when you should be; it matters only that you aren’t there! The bottom line is, the business will not be handled, and before long there won’t be a business. Setting goals and to-do lists helps, but if you’re not in the office, you aren’t working on those lists.

One would think that needing to earn a living would create the discipline to get in the office, but those who procrastinate explain it this way: On my way into the office, I stop to make myself a cup of coffee. That creates an opportunity to wash the dishes. While the coffee is still brewing, I get dressed and see the pile of clothes that need washed. While the clothes are washing, I do go in to the office and check emails (notice I said ‘check’, not handle). The coffee is done, so back out to the kitchen to pour a cup and fix breakfast. It’s a bright sunny morning, so I choose to have my breakfast on the deck. Looking around, I see there are weeds to pull. A half-hour later, back into the house to put the clothes in the dryer. Now I can get to work. But, Oh! It’s lunch time. After lunch there is every intention to go into the office, but the dryer buzzes and the clothes need folded.

You get the picture. Before you know it, the day is gone. Papers are piling up on the desk, phone calls and emails remain unanswered and bills haven’t been paid. But you do have a sparkling clean house and an immaculate garden!

This is a bit of an exaggeration, but too many people offered a similar routine to discount how easy it is for people without discipline to put off starting the work day. Replace the gardening and laundry with mowing, dusting, scrubbing floors, cooking, working on a hobby, watching TV, etc., and you can see how easy a week can go by without getting any work done.

The distractions of daily home tasks can overwhelm some home-based business owners. However, there are a few easy-to-establish habits you can adopt fairly quickly. First, write down everything you want accomplished to keep your home in the condition that will allow you to “go to work”. Maybe choose a couple days a week that you do laundry, one for yard work, etc. Always allow at least one hour a day for a quick run-through of the house first thing in the morning to do the little things that aren’t scheduled (pick up magazines, empty waste baskets, etc.).

Once you have a routine, you’ll discover many hours each day you can devote to your company. Also set a schedule and to-do list for your work tasks. Have specific days for chosen tasks (pay bills, write an article, out-of-office appointments, etc.) and that will help create concentrated blocks of time.

One time saver for the office is to check and ANSWER emails and phone messages only twice a day. Don’t leave the email account open. The little envelope appearing on your computer screen, or the ‘ding’ indicating you have mail, is a big distraction. Eliminate it. The amount of time you’ll save with this technique is amazing!
