History of Infosys
* 1981 led by Narayana Murthy, seven young people started a small company in Pune, Infosys Consultants Pvt. Ltd. with just US $250, zero infrastructure and their dream to create quality software. It was a tough struggle and family was relegated to the back seat. Fortunately the spouses shared and believed in the vision. Infosys got its first client Data Basics Corporation in NY.
* 1983 came the MICO engagement and Infosys moved to Bangalore * The first mini computer arrived at MICO, a Data General 32-bit MV8000. The very next year Infosys switched from mini to main frames with a CAMP application for a Data Basics customer. * 1987 Infosys opened its first international sales office in Boston * 1987-1990 Two offices came up in Bangalore - in Jayanagar and Koramangala. Exploring new avenues, the founders floated three companies but before long the focus returned to software services. Software was sent abroad by courier and source codes were often faxed. Over a 100 employees worked on-site and off-shore. The Global Delivery Model was evolving. * 1991 The early90s brought in economic liberalization and reforms in India and changed the business climate. The time was ripe to move to Europe. The first client in Europe was Labinf in Milan, Reebok France followed shortly. The DMAP application was developed and later installed at Reebok UK. * 1992 Infosys went public. The industry boomed and Infosys grew twice as fast. Strategic Business Units were set up. Business enabler groups were launched. * 1993 Infosys shared wealth with its employees - The ESOP had arrived. Infosys set standards for transparent corporate governance. * 1994 The corporate head quarters moved to Electronic City. The first development center was opened at Fremont. * 1995 Mangalore became the first Indian development center outside of Bangalore. * The revenue model changed from a single client dependency to a much wider base. The first European office was opened at UK. A global development center followed at Toronto. * 1996 The Infosys Foundation was formally launched. Infosys was voted the Best Managed company by Asia Money, every year from 1996-2000. * 1999 Infosys touched the US $100 million mark and was listed on the NASDAQ - a first for an India registered company. Became the 21 st company in the world to be accredited the CMM level 5 standard for software development. * 2000 Bancs2000 was re-launched as the Finacle suite of products. Revenues grow to US $200 million. The one building corporate head quarters now expands to a sprawling campus. * 2001 CEO NRN Murthy rated amongst Time Magazine/CNN's 25 most influential businessmen in the world. * 2002 Infosys brought the Indian shareholder to the global market by sponsoring secondary ADS offering. Grows to 345 clients across industry verticals. Employee strength crosses 10,000 and revenues touch the half a billion mark. RE: History of Infosys
Established in 1981, Infosys is a NASDAQ listed global consulting and IT services company with more than 103,000 employees. From a capital of US$ 250, we have grown to become a US$ 4 billion company with a market capitalization of approximately US$ 14 billion.
In our journey of over 25 years, we have catalyzed some of the major changes that have led to India's emergence as the global destination for software services talent. We pioneered the Global Delivery Model and became the first IT company from India to be listed on NASDAQ. Our employee stock options program created some of India's first salaried millionaires. banking offers |
