Hit them up with slander or charges of being libel.

You tell him "Welcome to the United States of America"!!!
An everyday occurrence in everyday american politics.
Sad, but true.

If their reporting is the truth, nothing. You cannot sue for libel or slander if the comments are the truth.

That said, in the case of Joe the Plumber, the media did not have the authority to investigate (and publicize) his personal information. So, he has a legitimate law suit. Joe's tax information is private.

If the news media cover the events of a person truthfully, even if the person is damaged by their attention, there is little he can do. Refer to the ridiculous lawsuit by one of the celebrities in Malibu who wanted to block paparazzi from flying near her home.

Blackmail is the crime of seeking personal gain by threatening to make damaging information public. Reporters and photographers almost never do this, since there is a strong personal incentive to make public every bit of information that is newsworthy and corroborated.

Have you any example of either problem?

RE: what a person do if the media is wrongly highlighting him in front of public and black mailing him?
This depends on if you are talking about yourself or a public figure. The rules for what is fair play concerning public figures in the media are different than those for individuals. Black mail is a serious accusation and is most frequently confused with the accurate reporting of facts compelling a person to be accountable for his or her actions. In the RARE case that black mail is actually the case, it is a legal issue, so hire a lawyer. As far as being wrongly highlighted by the media, that is the price of being a public figure, however if it is an issue of an private citizen I first suggest a good, long and honest look at oneself and discover where there is truth in what is being said. I realize that honesty is excruciatingly difficult for most people, especially when it comes to looking at oneself. If at the end of this reflection the person still believes he or she is being attacked, seek legal council, otherwise considering adjusting ones behavior and choices is a good idea.

Usually nothing and it's better not to pay so much attention to press writes. But sometimes people do it on purpose to become more famous.

He should be brave and speak himself to clarify that issue regarding the person involved on that situation.
