Field Hockey is actually Indias national sport,

it's decline can be attributed to the game switching to astroturf in the early 70's the Indians not having the funds to invest in the stuff unfortunately started to struggle with the faster pace of the game.

Football (Soccer for all the yanks) is another very popular sport in India

Hockey was the most popular sport till 1986 but after india won the world cup of cricket , cricket was on top. and now nobody likes to play hockey.

But in terms of performance,sports like shooting,boxing and wrestling have raised soaringly.Badminton is also becoming popular day-by day as Indians have started giving tough time to Chinese players.Team sports are not getting that same support as all except volleyball are declining.
